Risk of using medications for stomach acid
Prolonged use of antacids and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may lead to deficiencies in important nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and vitamin B12.
Why does this happen?
These medications reduce gastric acid, which is essential for the absorption of several minerals and vitamins. Long-term acid suppression can therefore impair their absorption.
Possible consequences:
▪️ Vitamin B12 deficiency → peripheral neuropathy, numbness, fatigue
▪️ Calcium deficiency → osteoporosis, increased fracture risk
▪️ Magnesium deficiency → muscle cramps, arrhythmias, weakness
Therefore, patients should be informed about the correct use of these drugs as follows:
■ Avoid unnecessary long-term use.
■ Take the lowest effective dose
■ Consider the use of dietary supplements
